Salvation And Discipleship:

Growing Up As A Christian

By A. Lin. Thomas

If you have just prayed that prayer out loud, you have just made the confession of faith in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. Now you must be discipled, and that simply means to learn about the faith walk and the Holy family you have been spiritually reborn into.

Having faith is not a one-time event, it is a lifetime opportunity to believe God for everything and every part of your life. He is now your Spiritual Father, Friend, Counselor, Helper, Advocate, Protector, Healer, Provider, and Disciplinarian, depending upon your behavior.

Yes, you are no longer a sinner in your nature, but you still have sinner tendencies that must be laid down. This won't happen overnight, but it will happen the more you draw closer to God and understand His righteous ways. "Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you" (James 4:8).

The most important aspect of being a believer (Christian) is your walk with God. He desires not just your faith, but your heart, mind and body. Now that the Holy Spirit has come to live inside of you as your Spiritual Partner you should notice that you are not the same in your thinking, feeling and doing. This is because you are not the same in your being, you are a new creation in Christ Jesus. "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!" (2 Corinthians 5:17, NIV)

As a new convert (New Christian) just be aware of the fact that you may sin, however, this does not mean you are still a sinner, you have just sinned in your behavior. Your flesh (The old sinner nature) that you used to dwell in is still trying to dominate you, but you don't have to keep sinning. But if you stumble into a sin, just ask God for forgiveness to acknowledge that you are conscience of the wrong behavior, then turn completely away from the bad behavior and any people or places that draw (tempt) you into that behavior pattern. Then enjoy knowing that God is not counting that sin against you as His child. You have not become His enemy because you've stumbled. But if you return to living a fully sinful lifestyle the consequences of that sinful lifestyle will be yours to endure. Don't let the devil steal your blessing and righteousness that has been gifted to you through Christ Jesus.

The more time you spend with God in prayer (Father, child bonding time), and studying your Bible (with the help of pastors, teachers, and evangelist who understand the Bible), your faith in God will grow more and more. You will learn how to trust Him with your very life, and all of the issues of this life. "Guard your heart above all else, for from it flow the issues of life.” (Proverbs 4:23).

I suggest you read your Bible daily to gain the full understanding of who He is to you, and who you are to Him. I would start with the 4 Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) from there just continue to read and study. The book of Romans will help you understand the process of salvation. All the other New Testament books will help you to understand what it means to be a Christian.

The New Testament is your new covenant with God. The first 4 books are called "The Gospels" and there you will get to learn about and see Jesus live as the "Son of God" and hear about how he teaches that we should live as "children of God." The rest of the books teach about how the Jews should now live as Christians and also how Gentiles who are now Christians should live. The last book of the Bible is called "Revelation" and it reveals the upcoming plans God has for all creation. As a child of God, you no longer have to fear this book, it is amazing to read the plans of God concerning Heaven and a new Earth. It can be confusing to understand all the symbolism of times to come, but God promises that in the end His Kingdom and His children will prevail.

Congratulations on your journey with God the Father, through Jesus the Son, by the power and guidance of the Holy Spirit, the Comforter and Counselor. Welcome to the family, even the angels are rejoicing over your decision to trust God with your life and Salvation (See Luke 15).

Always remember, "The Just (Righteous) shall live by faith" (Hebrews 10:38). "Without faith it is impossible to please God, ..." (Hebrews 11:6).

Note: Faith is simply trusting in God and then trusting God with your life and your decisions. You can come to God in prayer anytime you choose. Always begin your prayer in a humble stance whether you are on your knees or seated (God honors the humility of your heart). Start with "Father" then speak to Him about anything you need or want to thank Him for. At the end of your prayer remember to seal your request "in the name of Jesus, amen." Which means in Jesus, let it be done!

Get yourself a good Bible or Bible app that has a version you can understand. And find good preachers, teachers and evangelist that can help you better understand the Word of God. If you need assistance, please feel free to contact me through my contact page, and I can give you spiritual references that will help you grow. I won't give endorsements here but will share them with you if you need to know who is teaching the Bible truthfully. Be careful to read your Bible for yourself, that way when you hear a scripture misquoted you can reject that wrong teaching. We are not perfect, but we should not be consistently erroring.

Be blessed, stay safe, and enjoy your faith walk and growth in Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. And just know that I am praying for you as a member of my Christian family and community.
